14 Signs You Are Working In a Toxic Environment

Feeling like you’re in a toxic environment can really impact your mental and physical health, job satisfaction, and your overall well-being. It can be difficult to determine when you are in a toxic environment because the work culture can feel so familiar, or you have been with an employer for an extended time.

Nevertheless, there are various indications that you’re in a toxic environment. It is important to notice these signs and alleviate the situation by speaking with a supervisor or HR representative, soliciting help from coworkers or a therapist, or even finding a new job if the situation is irreparable.

You know you’ve gone too far when work dominates your life, and you barely have time to rest, let alone pursue a hobby. It’s not worth it because it leads to stress and even burnout.

Discrimination

Any instance of discrimination based on race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation is not only inappropriate but is also capable of creating a hostile work environment.

Favoritism

If only certain employees are singled out for special treatment or preferred treatment, it can breed suspicion and lack of trust amongst the coworkers. You should take the issue seriously and act on it as soon as possible.

When employees are in a position of blame for any mistakes or failures, that opens a door for a toxic workplace and low morale, which is obviously the worst.

A negative workplace can often be full of gossip, negativity, and an unsupportive atmosphere. If this continues and never goes away, it may be time for you to address the situation, or it may be time for you to find a new job that has a better workplace atmosphere.

Lack of Empathy

A lack of empathy and understanding among coworkers can create conflict and tension, leading to a very negative workplace. While this may not be addressed and discussed within the organization, the lack of empathy towards you in the workplace is a huge indicator that you work in a toxic workplace.

Bullying or Harassment

Without a doubt, the worst sign of all. Any type of bullying or harassment is totally unacceptable. It makes the workplace uncomfortable, unsafe, or unapproachable. You should never allow this to slide.

Lack of Recognition

We are not looking for a trophy or anything, but if hard work is ignored or not valued, it can create low morale and resentment, not to mention demotivation.

If policies, procedures, and management are ever-changing, it causes confusion and instability in the work environment.

When employees are placed in competition with each other, often the treatment of their colleagues can become cutthroat and harmful to morale and productivity, in all our experience.

Subtle Sexual Harassment

Subtle sexual harassment in the workplace is an insidious and deeply toxic form of behavior because it is often unnoticed or unaddressed, creating a hostile and uncomfortable environment. These subtle forms of behavior can include lewd comments, suggestive jokes, and unwanted advances. Because they are subtle, these behaviors erode trust and self-esteem, and they can create anxiety and fear in the victim.

Lack of Support
