17 Things Gen Xers Are Doing Better Than Anyone Else

While everyone’s busy arguing about Boomers vs. Millennials, Gen X is out there doing their thing. They’re succeeding at life without making a big deal about it, and that’s because they’re the “figure it out and move on” crowd. They were raised by TV and street lights, yet somehow still know how to fix stuff without Googling it. Here’s a look at 17 things this generation does better than anyone else.

Planning Road Trips Without an App

Gen X doesn’t obsess over travel planning, and they just throw a duffel in the car, maybe check a weather report, and then go. Whenever they need directions, they’ll use a map or ask someone at a gas station. This is a generation that doesn’t care about star ratings or the most “Instagrammable” diner. Instead, their goal is just to get out of town for a bit and see what happens.

Balancing Digital and Analog Tools

Gen X switches between apps and notebooks like it’s nothing. They’ll write something down on a sticky note while syncing a calendar invite, and it’s not because they’re tech-resistant. Rather, they just don’t dump what works, and if it ain’t broken, they’re keeping it. They remember birthdays because they actually wrote them down, and they don’t need reminders from five synced devices to remember a dentist appointment. They already called to confirm it last week.

Maintaining Friendships Without Constant Texting

Somehow, they’re still close with people they haven’t talked to since spring. You could ghost a Gen Xer by accident, and they’d just tell you that “life happens,” with no guilt trips and no drama. When you do eventually reconnect, it’s like zero time has passed because they’re not expecting constant check-ins or daily updates. Instead, they keep the connection going and don’t turn a relationship into a full-time job.

Watching TV Without Multitasking

Gen X grew up when you actually had to sit down and watch the show, commercials and all, so they’re the ones who put their phone down during a movie. That’s right. They actually pay attention. They remember episode numbers and character arcs, as well as entire quotes, because they actually watched the thing. For them, watching TV is still an event, and they’ll show up for it like it matters, because it still kinda does.

Working Without Needing Constant Praise

This generation knows how to do the job and go home, with no need for Slack emojis or motivational posters. A Gen Xer simply gets the job done, as they grew up in cubicles and fluorescent lighting. Surviving that builds character, and they don’t ask for feedback unless something’s on fire. They’ll finish the work when it needs to be done because they learned early that you do the work so the lights stay on, not so someone claps.

Handling Boredom Without a Phone

Gen X knows all too well what it’s like to just sit and think about things, as they used to survive car rides staring at clouds or playing license plate games. This was a time before podcasts and screens. For them, waiting in line didn’t need a distraction because they just waited, and they didn’t expect constant entertainment. As a result, their brain knows how to wander without needing a rush of dopamine every three seconds, which is pretty unique.

Knowing When to Unplug Without Announcing It

Rather than sharing a dramatic post about how they’re “taking a break from social,” Gen X will just vanish for a few days to go and live their lives. They’ll come back when they feel like it. It’s simple peace and quiet, like the good old days, without asking if anyone else noticed. That’s quite different from other generations, especially the younger ones, who wait for reactions to every single decision.

Knowing How to Parent Without Googling Every Emotion

This generation isn’t interested in raising a “gentle genius” with a sticker chart and a mindfulness bell. Rather, they want to raise a human who uses their manners and doesn’t draw on walls. Whenever their kid threw a tantrum, they didn’t stop the world to process their feelings, but just got through it. Sometimes, that’d involve a timeout, and sometimes it’d be with ice cream.

Staying Married Through the Boring Parts

Gen X isn’t chasing passion every day, and they pay mortgages while trying not to forget garbage day. Having an argument wasn’t toxic for them. Instead, it’s just a regular Wednesday. Even through all that, Gen X still showed up without the expectation of constant excitement or deep revelations. They stuck around, even when it was weird or quiet or annoying, because they were in it for the real stuff.

Balancing Aging Parents and Teen Kids Without Complaining Constantly

They’d go from arguing with a teen about curfew to reminding their dad to take his meds, without even taking a breath. Gen X doesn’t post emotional rants about being pulled in two directions, but just figured out who needed what that day. Then, they handled it. It’s just their way of dealing with the generation gap.

Holding the Same Job for Over a Decade Without Bragging

While other generations might make graphics celebrating “Year 14 at [Insert Company Name],” Gen X doesn’t do this. They just work. For them, building a personal brand at the office isn’t all that important, as they were trying to retire with enough to not panic. Maybe they liked their job, maybe they didn’t, but either way, they showed up and did it. This generation stayed put because stability still meant something.

Handling Being Laid Off Without Making It Their Whole Identity

Speaking of jobs, Gen X has been laid off by email and voicemail before, just like other generations. But unlike other generations, Gen Xers won’t write a long post about growth and gratitude. Instead, they’ll apply for unemployment and move on to looking for the next position, with just a little panicking. But that was only in private.

Showing Up to Reunions Without Needing to Prove Anything

You’ll see Gen X showing up to reunions in whatever still fits, without rehearsing elevator pitches or checking their LinkedIn stats before they walk in. They’re there for the stories and the catch-ups, not to blow their own trumpet. Nobody’s impressing anyone. They just want to find out who married whom and which teacher actually did get fired. That’s all that matters to them.

Taking Care of Friends Without Making It a Project

This generation doesn’t need a plan or a group thread to help someone, as they’ll just show up with what you need. It could be a box of junk food, or it could be a strong drink. It might even just be silence. Even so, they’re not asking how you’re feeling every hour because they already know it’s probably bad, and that you’d rather just have someone there without all the questions. Their whole thing is that if something’s broken, they’ll try to fix it. If it’s not fixable, they’ll sit with you until it passes.

Keeping Private Stuff Private

Some people think Gen X is too private, but that’s not necessarily true. They’ll open up if they want to, yet you also won’t get a highlight reel of their lowest moments. You’ll find out if you’re close, and if you’re not, you won’t, which isn’t exactly rudeness. It’s simply how they’re built. They process things offline, in real conversations or not at all, and they don’t need likes to validate pain. Any vague posts they share mean it’s probably worse than they’re letting on.

Getting Their Kids to School on Time, Every Day

Mornings aren’t magical for anyone, but for Gen X, they’re slightly more manageable. Gen X gets everything done, even though it might involve some yelling, and maybe skipping breakfast. But the kids end up at school, dressed, more or less awake, and not traumatized, which is enough.

Surviving Middle Management

Gen X certainly knows what they’re doing in management, and they’re able to guide people who need constant feedback. They can also deal with bosses who send 4 AM emails about vision. They’ve learned when to push back and when to let people talk themselves into circles. In fact, half their job is explaining things once to their team, and once to the exec who forgot, but they don’t need applause for it. They just need the coffee machine to work.
