Actors Who Died on Set While Filming a Movie or TV Show

The world of cinema never fails to captivate us with the artistry of its actors. Their portrayals have the power to whisk us away to distant worlds, evoking profound admiration for their craft. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to acknowledge that acting can come with its own set of hazards, and tragically, some actors have met untimely demises while in pursuit of their on-screen artistry.

Today, we will look at nine actors who tragically died during production.

Brandon Lee – The Crow (1994)

1994 – Miramax Films.

Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts icon Bruce Lee, was filming “The Crow” in 1993 when he was involved in a horrific accident. A prop gun that was supposed to fire blanks was loaded with a fragment of a real bullet lodged in the barrel, causing a fatal injury. Despite being taken immediately to the hospital, Lee died from his injuries. The film was completed with special effects and body doubles and was released the following year as an homage to Lee’s memory.

Roy Kinnear – The Return of the Musketeers (1989)

Roy Kinnear, a British actor, shattered his pelvis after falling off a horse while filming “The Return of the Musketeers” in 1989.

He was brought to a hospital in Spain, but complications from his injuries caused him to pass away the next day.

Martha Mansfield – The Warrens of Virginia (1924)

In 1923, actress Martha Mansfield was filming a scene for “The Warrens of Virginia” when a discarded cigarette ignited her outfit. Despite the crew’s efforts to extinguish the flames, Mansfield sustained severe burns and died the next day due to her burns.

John Ritter – Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (2002)

John Ritter was an American actor known for his roles in TV shows like “Three’s Company.” In 2003, he was filming the second season of “Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter” when he collapsed on set due to aortic dissection. He was taken to a hospital, where he died during surgery. 

Ken Steadman – Sliders “Dessert Storm”(1996)

At the age of 27, Steadman tragically passed away in a dune-buggy accident while working on the production of the “Desert Storm” episode of the TV series Sliders near Victorville, California.

During the filming of the episode, Steadman, who was playing the character Cutter, met with a fatal accident in between takes. While he was relocating a dune buggy to the next shooting spot, the vehicle overturned and tragically crushed him, causing instant death. Steadman’s parents believe that his untimely demise could have been avoided.

Redd Foxx – The Royal Family (1991)

Redd Foxx, a comedian, and actor, was filming the television series “The Royal Family” in 1991 when he suffered a heart attack on set. Despite the crew’s and medical professionals’ efforts, Foxx passed away a few hours later. The show was later canceled due to Foxx’s death.

Tyrone Power – Solomon and Sheba (1959)

Tyrone Power was a well-known American actor best remembered for his work in swashbuckler films such as “The Mark of Zorro.” He was knocked out while being filmed in a dueling scene for “Solomon and Sheba” in 1958 in Madrid. He was taken to the hospital urgently, where he passed away at 44 from a heart attack. They later completed the film with another actor performing Power’s role.

Steve Irwin – Ocean’s Deadliest (2007)

Steve Irwin, commonly known as “The Crocodile Hunter,” was a wildlife expert and media personality from Australia who appeared in both motion pictures and TV shows. He was killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest when he was filming the documentary “Ocean’s Deadliest” in 2006. He got injured and passed away despite efforts to save him. 

Jon-Erik Hexum – Cover Up (1984)

In 1984, actor Jon-Erik Hexum was playing a game of Russian roulette with a prop gun loaded with blanks on the set of “Cover Up.” He jokingly put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, not realizing that the force of the blank cartridge was enough to cause a fatal injury. He was taken to a hospital but died a few days later.

Tommy Cooper – Live from Her Majesty’s (1984)

Tommy Cooper was a renowned British comedian and magician known for his unique blend of humor and magic tricks. On April 15, 1984, during a live televised performance on the show “Live from Her Majesty’s,” tragedy struck. While in the middle of his act, Cooper suddenly collapsed on stage, appearing to the audience as part of a comedic routine. Unfortunately, it became apparent that Cooper was experiencing a severe medical emergency.

Despite the best efforts of those around him, including fellow performers and medical professionals, Cooper was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hospital. His untimely death shocked the entertainment world, and fans mourned the loss of a beloved and talented performer.

Vic Morrow – Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)

Vic Morrow was an American actor known for his roles in movies and TV shows. In 1982, he was filming “Twilight Zone: The Movie” when he was killed in a helicopter accident.

During a scene where he was carrying two child actors across a river, a sudden helicopter crash caused the rotor blades to decapitate Morrow and one of the children while the other child was crushed to death.
